What it covers
The battery stores charge, the alternator replaces it, and the starter draws heavily on it. A fault in any one of the three looks much the same from the driver seat, so all three get tested.
Signs you need it
- Slow or laboured cranking, especially on cold mornings
- Clicking when you turn the key
- Headlights dim at idle or brighten when you rev
- Battery or charging warning light on the dash
- The car needs a jump start more than once
What we do
- Battery load tested, not just voltage checked
- Alternator output and ripple measured under load
- Starter motor draw tested
- Parasitic drain tested where the battery goes flat overnight
- Terminals, earth straps and cabling inspected for corrosion
- Correct battery specification fitted and the system retested

Common questions
My battery is only two years old — can it be dead?
Yes. Short trips, extreme heat and a charging fault all shorten battery life. Testing tells you whether the battery failed or something killed it.
Do modern cars need the battery registered?
Many European and newer cars do. Fitting a battery without registering it to the charging system can shorten its life considerably.
